Book Review: My Husband’s Wife

Book: My Husband’s Wife

Author: Alice Feeny

Thank you, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio, for an advanced audio copy.

This is now my fourth book read with the title My Husband’s Wife, and this was hands down the best of those four.  Alice Feeny is one of those great authors that everyone loves, but for some reason, I usually struggle to get into her books. Not this time. I was hooked from the very beginning.

Eden is an artist about to get her big break. She is set to be featured in an art exhibit. The day of her exhibit, she decides to go for a run. When she returns, her key will not open the door to her home. Eventually, a woman answers who resembles her appearance. This mysterious woman claims to be Eden, and Eden’s husband confirms that this new mysterious woman is his wife. Two people claiming to be the same woman set us on an adventure with multiple POVs and multiple timelines.

This book has a lot of twists, and most of them I didn’t see coming. I feel I’m a tough one to fool with twists in books, and I was fooled. Feeny’s writing was perfect, and the way the story unfolds shows just how perfectly she has mastered the genre.

Unfortunately, this review is of the audiobook, and this is where I had some issues. The narrators were great and did a fantastic job. The presentation went for a hybrid approach between a complete audio production and a standard audiobook, which is where I ran into some issues.

The background sounds were too loud and drowned out the excellent narration. For example, during Eden’s run, you hear the ocean, and the sound of the waves is competing with the narration instead of complementing it. The same can go for other background sounds, like her key sliding into the lock.

As a written story, it’s perfect, but as an audiobook, the extra production detracts from the narration rather than enhancing it.

Final score: 4/5
