Without a Clue sent me on a wide range of thoughts and emotions about this book. People like to say some stories are like a roller coaster; well, that was my opinion on this book. It just kept going up and down, and then finally ended up.
The premise of this story was nothing new. The ending, however, was totally different from anything I have read. I will not spoil the ending, but I was shocked and, at first, didn’t like it. After I thought about it, I came around on it and really liked its conclusion.
So I liked the ending, but how did it start? Honestly, not well for me. Without a Clue seems to borrow ideas from other stories, which, thinking now, I guess works with this plot; interesting. This is essentially a locked-door mystery.
Pip is a protégé of a famous author, one of 7 who call themselves the Fabulous 7. Hugh is Pip’s boss and seems to be the leader of the 7. Pip finds Hugh dead, and then we spiral into an investigation that has Pip partnering with Nash, a young, handsome author in a cowboy hat.
Without a Clue often reached for humor; it is some of its more serious moments of death and murder, and it mostly hit to lighten the mood. I did mention it was a roller coaster for me, so I’ll explain why. The book started, and it took a little bit to get me hooked. Then the murder happened, and I was hooked. The investigations often were dragged out a little too long, leaving me a little bored. The back-and-forth flirting was well done and always interesting, and then we plummet into an ending that was so unique I hated it at first.
This book definitely kept me guessing, and I do recommend it.
Final score: 4/5
