Reasons to Lie is a thriller about New York’s elite tangled up in a murder mystery where everyone has something to hide. As a fan of Gossip Girl, I was in for a story about the New York elite, but Reasons to Lie never fully grabbed me.
The characters are all unlikable, but that’s the point. Who likes the rich, entitled New Yorkers? The answer is noone. So even knowing I’m supposed to hate them all, I still just couldn’t get it. There was a storyline early on in which one of the moms chose to hide her daughter’s existence from the dad, and the daughter had no idea. Once this storyline started, I just checked out.
The three main characters, Abby, Kara, and Hollis, were almost interchangeable in my head. I had a hard time keeping up with who was who with them and how their personalities were.
My other major issues with the plot were with the teenage characters. I already stated that not everyone is likable, and that pertains to the teens as well. There was no growth with them. None of them matured through the events of the story.
I feel like there is a great story buried between all this that I didn’t like. If you’re someone who can’t get enough of the New York elite, then definitely check this out, but as a thriller, it may leave you wanting a little more.
Final Score: 3/5
