Book Review: Not Home Alone

Book: Not Home Alone

Author: Kayley Loring

This one had a fun premise that just did not quite come together for me.

Not Home Alone follows Merrily Tucker, an eternal optimist who arrives at a beautiful Christmas rental in Holly Grove only to find the certified Grinch Grant Moody already inside. Neither of them will budge, so they are stuck together for the holidays. Forced proximity, enemies to lovers, Christmas chaos. All the ingredients are there for a really fun romance.

The problem is I never warmed up to either of them. Both Merrily and Grant are unlikable and immature for most of the book, and while there were moments that made me laugh, I was laughing at them rather than with them. That is a fine line and this one stayed firmly on the wrong side of it for me.

Enemies to lovers only works when you eventually believe the lovers part. By the end of this one I was not entirely convinced these two had moved past the enemies stage at all.

It has its moments and fans of Loring’s other work may get more out of it than I did. But this one just missed the mark for me.

Final Score: 3/5
