Book Review: This Weekend Doesn’t End Well For Anyone

Book: This Weekend Doesn’t End Well For Anyone

Author: Catherine Mack

Thank you, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio, for an advanced audio copy.

This Weekend Doesn’t End Well For Anyone, which I will just refer to as the “book” for the rest of the review because that title is a mouthful, is the third book in the vacation mysteries. I have read the first two books, and I would say that this would not work well as a standalone. You should approach this series in order. Author Catherine Mack does a recap and explains some of the recurring plot points, but you do need to know the first two stories.

I love Mack’s writing style. She constantly breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to the reader. To me, it reads like an author just having fun, and I love that.

Eleanor Dash returns, filled with all her baggage from the first two books, and again stumbles right into a real murder. At a writing conference that she is out of, one body turns up more, and it seems it’s up to Eleanor to solve it.

The way the mysteries play out and are solved by constantly talking to the reader mostly hits the mark and is entertaining. It’s my favorite part about these series, and I wish more books would adapt that style.

It’s hard to recommend this book if you’re new to the series, but it’s easy to recommend the first book and dive right into the series from the beginning.

Final score: 4/5
