Personally, I have always felt Peter Pan was a horror story. With that in mind, seeing this book, I was thrilled and could not wait to start.
It Came From Neverland is a retelling of Peter Pan but also positions itself as the origin story for J.M. Barrie’s story. Wendy says that Barrie retold her story but made it happier. Not the brutal nightmare she lived through.
Twelve years ago, they thought they stopped Peter, but he’s back, and they must stop him for good this time. The way the storyline played out did remind me of Stephen King’s It. The general idea of fighting your childhood demon. The similarities did stop there, and this book stood on its own as a good horror story.
Unfortunately, I felt the story moved very slowly and left me confused at certain points. Once Peter was more of a constant, which took a lot longer than I expected, the story ramped up and held my attention.
I do love the idea of these classic stories retold as horror and will sometimes check out anything I find like this.
Final Score: 3/5
