I had high hopes for this one, and while it wasn’t bad, it didn’t quite hit the way I wanted it to.

Fair Game follows Will, a hockey player, and his longtime family friend-turned PR Rep, Drew. The premise is fun, and there is real potential here in the workplace tension, the sports backdrop, and the slow-burning forbidden romance. All the ingredients are there.

My biggest issue was with the two leads. I never fully connected with Will or Drew. I struggled to find them all that relatable or likable, and that made it hard to fully invest in their relationship.

The tone also felt a little inconsistent. A lot of the time, the story read almost like a young adult novel, lighthearted and a bit surface-level, and then the spicy scenes would pop up and feel completely out of place. Like two different books colliding.

I also wish the hockey element were woven in more. Most of the book, it just felt like it was in the background.

That said, it is not a bad read. The pacing moves along well, and there were moments I genuinely enjoyed. If you are a fan of sports romance and do not mind a lighter tone, you might get more out of it than I did.

Final Score: 3/5
