Book Review: Lucky 22

Book: Lucky 22

Author: Ashley Eckstein and Samantha Chase

Thank you, NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing, for an advanced audio copy.

This one was genuinely painful to write about because I am such a fan of both of these women.

Lucky 22 is inspired by Ashley Eckstein’s real life love story with former MLB player and World Series MVP David Eckstein, and I have no doubt that to Ashley this is the most magical fairytale imaginable. And honestly? Good for her. That story sounds wonderful.

The problem is that a real love story and a fictional romance are two very different things, and what makes a real relationship special does not always translate onto the page. Ella and Christian are sweet people but neither of them comes off particularly well at times, and outside of some bouts of long distance there is just not a lot of conflict driving the story forward. A romance needs something to push against and this one never quite found that.

What makes every Samantha Chase book work is that spark, that tension, that thing that keeps you flipping pages desperate to see how they get together. I kept waiting for it here and it never fully arrived.

I walked away disappointed but I want to be clear, I am still a fan of both Ashley and Samantha. Sometimes a project just does not come together the way everyone hopes, and that is okay. I will absolutely keep reading them both.

Final Score: 2/5
