This was the perfect book for spooky season and it had nothing to do with actual scares.
A Pinch of Magic follows Cam Parker, a cookbook ghostwriter who returns to her coastal Virginia hometown of Silver Cove to help repair her beloved grandmother Birdie’s storm damaged home. While she is there she accidentally summons the spirit of Ada, a woman who died a century ago and has been waiting ever since for someone to help right a century old wrong.
The paranormal element is handled so well here. It is not scary, it is warm and charming and woven naturally into the story in a way that never feels out of place. The small town setting is cozy and inviting and the cast of characters is genuinely delightful.
Birdie was my absolute favorite. She is the kind of character that just lights up every scene she is in and I adored her completely.
The ending was exactly what this kind of story deserves. Satisfying in all the right ways and it left me with a big smile on my face.
If you are looking for something that captures the magic of the season without going full horror, this one is a perfect October read.
Final score: 4/5
