Book: Beyond Reach
Author: Karin Slaughter
Thank you, NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing, for an advanced audio copy.
Beyond Reach follows Sara Linton and Jeffrey Tolliver as they travel to Jeffrey’s hometown of Sylacauga, Alabama after his childhood friend Lena Adams is arrested for the murder of a drug dealer. What they find there is a town with deep and dangerous secrets, a corrupt police force, and a community that will do anything to keep its darkest history buried.
My only regret going into this one is that I have not read the rest of the Grant County series first. The emotional weight of what happens in this book clearly carries a lot more punch if you have been with these characters since the beginning. I could feel that there were moments designed to hit hard and I knew I was missing the full impact.
That said it is still a very good read on its own. Slaughter does not pull punches and the story is gripping from start to finish.
Consider this my reminder to myself to go back and read the series from the beginning because if this is where it ends up, the whole journey is worth taking.
