Book Review: The Anniversary

Book: The Anniversary

Author: Alex Finlay

Thank you, NetGalley, and Macmillan Audio, for an advanced audio copy.

Alex Finlay is an automatic read for me. I drop whatever book I’m reading to start his new book when it comes out. That’s how much of a fan of his stories I am.

The Anniversary is my least favorite so far, but the bar is already being set too high, which still makes this a great thriller. The story takes place on the same day, May 1st, over the course of a decade. We follow two characters and see how their lives are intertwined through the serial killer known as the May Day Killer.

The premise is interesting, but I felt the execution was his weakest. Finlay always does such a great job developing characters, and seeing them only one day a year felt like we were being robbed of some great world-building. I never felt confused, but there were times when, without the context of every other day, I felt like I wasn’t always in the know.

There was a good amount of twists, and most of them I did not see coming. I really liked all of the twists and turns revolving around Quinn. He and Jules are the main characters, but Quinn was the star.

Alex Finlay will continue to be a stop everything and read their new book. I may have said this is my least favorite of his, but it is still a great book on my short list of favorite books of the year.

Final score: 4/5
