Every time a new book in the Andy Carpenter series comes out, I’m just blown away by how good it is. I love this series, and even though this is number 33 in the series, don’t let that scare you. Each story works as a standalone. You definitely will get more out of some characters if you have read a previous book, but it’s nothing that hinders the story. Frankly, it’s amazing how each book is both excellent to newcomers and existing fans.
If you’re unfamiliar with this series, I love to describe each book as the best episode of Matlock. If you don’t know what Matlock is, sadly, we can’t be friends. Each book has defense lawyer Andy Carpenter taking in a case where the evidence is stacked against the defendant, but based on his instincts and the fact that most of his defendants love dogs, Andy takes the case and then, with his team of lovable side characters, investigates and solves the case.
All of the characters get their time to shine. But Andy is always the star. He is always sarcastic, and in the audiobook, his sarcastic wits are always perfectly narrated by Grover Gardner.
This is a series that I will always recommend to anyone. I don’t know who these books wouldn’t be for. It has humor, mystery, action, and drama. There’s really nothing they don’t have, and there has not been a better time to jump into an Andy Carpenter book.
Final score: 5/5
