I wanted to love this one, but it just did not fully come together for me.
Run for Your Life is a short story, and the premise had real promise. The thriller elements are there, and Berry knows how to set a tense scene. The problem is that underneath the suspense, this felt much more like a commentary on the American healthcare system than an actual thriller.
And look, the message is not wrong. The healthcare system is broken, and so many hardworking people are failed by it every single day. I get it, I really do. But when the agenda starts to overshadow the story, it becomes a problem. I found myself more aware of the point being made than invested in what was actually happening.
For a short story, especially, you do not have a lot of pages to balance a thriller plot and a social message. Something has to give, and unfortunately, it was the tension. The thriller elements ended up feeling a little flat as a result.
Not a bad read overall, and the length makes it a quick one. But if you are picking this up hoping for a gripping, edge-of-your-seat short story, you might come away a little underwhelmed.
Final Score 3/5
