Book Review: Practically Magic

Book: Practically Magic

Thank you, NetGalley and Harper Audio, for an advanced audio copy.

I almost skipped this one and I am so glad I did not. I will be honest, I am getting a little tired of books being marketed as perfect for Gilmore Girls fans when they have nothing in common with Gilmore Girls. It feels like an ongoing trend that sets the wrong expectations. So I went in a little skeptical.

But this book won me over completely.

Practically Magic follows Kat Hadley, a young witch from a long line of powerful women in the town of Mystic Hollow. When she discovers her older sister Harriet cast a curse on her to protect her from heartbreak, Kat’s anger causes her to shatter the spell entirely, sending the family’s magic into chaos right on the eve of Halloween.

The Halloween and monster elements are so much fun and are woven into the story in a way that actually matters to the plot. The sister dynamic between Kat and Harriet is genuine and emotional. And the aunts? The aunts absolutely steal the show. I loved every scene they were in.

I really have nothing bad to say about this one. It is funny, heartfelt, spooky, and cozy all at once. The perfect fall read.

Final Score: 5/5
