This one was a lot more than I bargained for, and I mean that in the best and most complicated way.
She’s a Doll follows Lucy, a young woman who gets murdered and throws her spirit into an antique porcelain doll to hunt down the man who killed her. If that sounds like a fun, campy horror romp, it is. But it is also a lot more emotionally heavy than I expected going in.
I picked this up thinking Child’s Play energy and got something much deeper. The friendship between Lucy and Nicola, the human who becomes her unlikely partner, carries a lot of heart and the story hits harder emotionally than the premise suggests. That is not a complaint, just something to know going in.
My one issue is with how a specific event unfolds near the end. I will not spoil anything, but I will say the author clearly knew this moment was going to divide readers because she made it a book club discussion question. That says everything. I had my own strong feelings about it.
Still a really good, unique read that I would recommend. Just go in prepared to feel things.
