I have been with this series since book one and this installment takes things in a noticeably different direction.
This time around we follow Hailey, who thought she had finally left her past behind after starting fresh in New York City. When her ex shows up at her door to tell her the mobster they robbed five years ago has tracked them down, she finds herself on the run and tangled up between two very different men. The why choose element is new to this series and I am still figuring out how I feel about that trope if I am being completely honest. It is not usually my thing.
But here is the thing. The book was great. The tone is darker and more action packed than the previous installments, and that was a really welcome surprise. Hensley keeps things moving and the mob element gives the story a propulsive energy the earlier books did not have. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat in a way I was not expecting from this series.
If you have been following along since the beginning you will notice the shift, but I think most readers will embrace it. Hensley continues to find ways to keep this series feeling fresh.
